Sedation is a game-changer for anyone who feels anxious about undergoing dental treatment.

Feel fully relaxed whilst in the dentist’s chair and start your journey to feeling more confident about visiting the dentist in the future.

What is sedation?

The use of intravenous sedation administered into the vein using a very small needle is indispensable when we treat nervous patients. The sedative quickly induces feelings of calm and euphoria, which prevail over anxiety and fear of the dentist whilst you are having your given treatment.

Sedation: at a glance

  • Quickly relaxes you before a procedure.
  • Patients often have no memory of the procedure.
  • Conscious mode of sedation.
  • Helps time to pass quickly during lengthy procedures.
  • You won’t feel any discomfort during your treatment.

Frequently asked questions

When is sedation suitable?

Sedation is commonly used when a patient feels their phobia of the dentist is an obstacle to them having dental treatment.

However, it’s also suitable when:

  • You are having multiple procedures performed.
  • You are having a long procedure performed.
  • You struggle with gag reflex/keeping your mouth open for long periods of time.

What happens once I’m sedated?

Before we sedate you, we will agree upon a safe signal, should you wish for us to stop for any reason at all. It’s paramount that you feel in control during your time in our care. One of our experienced anaesthetists will monitor you closely to make sure you are comfortable and that your blood pressure and vitals are as they should be.

You will be completely awake when we perform your treatment, and once the effects wear off, you won’t experience the ‘grogginess’ which is so often associated with general anaesthetic.

I’m scared of the whole dental practice environment – will sedation really help?

Sedation completely alters your perception of your surroundings, in the best possible way. If you’re nervous about the sound of the apparatus in the practice, sedation will make you completely oblivious to your fear of this. Along with the relaxing effects, you will feel a dose of confidence, allowing your dentist to carry out the treatment you need.

In our experience, a big proportion of patients who choose to have sedation just once, no longer need it for future procedures. It’s all about re-writing your personal narrative surrounding dental treatment, to make way for a positive new chapter.
