With the high standard of periodontal care available in the practice, we look forward to working with you in stabilising your gum condition.
However advanced gum disease has become, we can produce a tailored treatment plan that will address the symptoms and damage it has caused.
The first step is to take measurements of the pockets around each tooth to observe the progression of the disease. Wherever possible, we will use non-surgical techniques to manage the disease, such as root cleaning or debridement, which is generally carried out over a couple of appointments. This treatment reaches the plaque that’s located under your gum line. It’s then possible to reduce the size of the pockets that have formed as a result of gum disease.
Periodontal surgery is something we will look into if you’re suffering from advanced gum disease, though we will always explore non-surgical options first wherever possible. We have the facilities to treat deeper periodontal ‘gum’ pockets with the latest biomaterials to help stabilise your gum disease, with the aim of keeping your natural teeth for longer.
Our in-house periodontist, Dr Annjeet, is currently completing a master’s in Periodontology and offers surgical and non-surgical periodontal treatment to stabilise periodontal disease. Dr Annjeet is happy to talk to you through your diagnosis at the initial consultation appointment. A bespoke treatment plan will then be devised according to your needs. This will always include a thorough and customised oral hygiene programme on what, when and how to use toothbrushes and interdental aids and what improvements can be made to your current regime. In addition, as periodontal disease has many risk factors including diabetes, smoking and family history, the treatment plan devised will take these all into account and act accordingly.
Welling Dental Studio is also a referral practice for periodontal treatment. We take great pride in looking after patients who come to us for periodontal treatment from South East London, Kent and beyond.
What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is the deterioration of the gums and bone that sits beneath them. It’s caused by plaque, which creates toxins that inflame the gums. Once the periodontal disease reaches a certain stage, pockets form, in which plaque can enter and causes bone loss. This is detrimental to your oral health, as teeth can become loose as a result of bone and gum deterioration.
How do I know if I have periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease can be a silent enemy to your gum health, only causing symptoms once things have become advanced. The early stages may only cause some minor bleeding after you brush and floss, also known as gingivitis. If not treated at this stage, this will progress onto periodontal ‘gum’ disease. You might notice your teeth looking ‘longer’, due to the gum recession caused by the disease. Hygiene cleans are indispensable for removing plaque and tartar from the gum line, which works with you to stop more serious symptoms from occurring. To put the severity of gum disease into context, it’s important to remember that it’s the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. But it’s not all doom and gloom, as it’s completely avoidable, as long as you visit us for regular professional cleans.
