As they are the groundwork in which your teeth exist, they need to stay in great condition so that your teeth can keep performing the functions you need them to. Routine hygiene appointments ensure that this remains the case.
Hygiene appointments should be an essential part of your efforts to stay healthy, just like your visits to the dentist.
Our responsibility is to remove plaque from along your gum line so that gum disease is not able to strike and create problems such as gum recession and small pockets between your teeth. Such issues make your teeth vulnerable not only to gum disease but to decay and dental erosion too.
Hygiene appointments: at a glance
Airflow tooth polishing is a gentle, supplementary clean that you can opt for after a classic scale and polish during your hygiene clean visits. The mixture of water, powder particles and compressed air is applied to your teeth and does an amazing job of getting to the nooks and crannies of your mouth, where plaque and tartar may have settled. We highly recommend Airflow Polishing, particularly for patients who have high-risk factors for gum disease, and who have a significant amount of plaque and tartar along the gum line.
What is plaque?
Plaque is the enemy of your tooth and gum health. In fact, once plaque begins to cause symptoms that are indicative of gum disease, you risk putting your oral health on the path to problems that could result in tooth loss.
Even people who take great care of their teeth are vulnerable to the build-up of plaque since it’s created every time we eat when the mouth breaks down foods. The acids within plaque can go on to cause enamel erosion and destroy supporting structures like gums and jawbone.
Hygiene cleans are indispensable for getting to plaque that’s stuck in between your teeth and stopping it from turning to tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional. If tartar isn’t removed, this can be extremely detrimental to your gums, causing irritation that will bring about the onset of gum disease.
Hygiene cleans also freshen your breath, which can give you much more confidence during your day-to-day interactions with others.
Our responsibility to you?
As all good dentists will tell you, prevention is at the heart of maintaining healthy teeth and gums. This is because teeth don’t have restorative properties of their own, so once they’re damaged they need repairing.
Keeping ahead of problems with your gums before they manifest into something serious is the most valuable action you can take to protect your teeth. We can show you everything from how to use your toothbrush more efficiently and how to floss correctly for a comprehensive clean, to giving you an insight into which food and drink in your diet might be contributing to the deterioration of your oral health.
What happens if I don’t have regular hygiene cleans?
We never want to unnerve our patients, but it’s our responsibility as dental professionals to say that continuously not having regular dental hygiene cleans can result in loose teeth and even lost teeth.
